homage to summer: asheville, north carolina

September 13, 2009

nico and i spent a night on the way to athens with alex, a good friend of dorothy’s who is a potter’s apprentice in the appalachians outside of asheville, north carolina. we saw spiky spiders, shot bbs at tin cans in the woods, wound through the mountains at 2am, and breakfasted on local-egg sandwiches.

alex lives in his own cabin (built by hand by the potter!) with his lovely cat, mabel, and a lot of solitary time. it sounds wonderful and it is. the mountain scenery is unbelievable and if you need to socialize, it’s not too far from asheville, an artsy little college town which reminded us of a mix of portland and athens.

alex was a terrific host, giving us a tour of the studio, the kiln, the pond and his neighborhood goats. north carolina is famous for its long tradition of craft, pottery in particular, and it was great to see someone who (literally) has their hands in the modern incarnation of those traditions.
