brandi strickland‘s colorful, age-of-aquarius collages have been catching my eye on various art blogs for a while now. her site & shop, paperwhistle, is a clever way of making her work available to the masses, documenting her process and offering affordable prints and original works. when i read that she had just moved to richmond, virginia, i thought it would be a great opportunity for our first BIG THINGS AHEAD with a stranger!

i didn’t really expect anything less than a sweet, friendly, southern belle, and that’s exactly what brandi is. not only was she so excited to fill out the BTA questions, she was also totally psyched when i asked if she wanted to send some pieces to show at the BIG PARTY. this will actually be brandi’s san francisco debut!!! and we’re just as excited to be a part of it! don’t miss her work and prints at the party on friday!

thanks to brandi, paperwhistle & for the photos!

Name:  Brandi Strickland

Age:  25

Hometown:  Charlotte N.C.

Where are you right now? Richmond, VA, in my upstairs home studio.

What do you do? I’m an artist. I play with paper, glue, paint, pens, pencils and cameras. I enjoy documenting and sharing my process.

Where are you going? I’ve just ‘arrived’ actually!? 2010 was dedicated to choosing a place and then actually moving, a feat accomplished in August. Beyond that, I’m working on a new series of artworks that I hope to show someplace nice.

What will you be doing when you get there? Everything! Before we (my love and I) moved, life was on pause. We were just planning, saving and packing. Now we’re nesting, setting up a comfortable living/working environment, and exploring our new city. Most of all, I hope to make mo’better artwork than ever before.

How did you decide to go in this direction? Looking back on it, 2010 has been a breakthrough year for me. I spent a lot of it pushing around mental and emotional bricks, trying to figure out what I wanted to do, where I wanted to go…. We finally decided on Richmond because it felt like the right place. It’s a beautiful, natural, walkable, temperate, affordable, artsy, inspired city. The change of place is like a whole life prescription for me.

Do you have any expectations? I hope my art improves. I hope to show in more galleries. I hope to relax a little more and have opportunities to travel. I hope unexpectedly good things happen–surprises that I’m not thinking of and couldn’t imagine.

Are you excited? Nervous? Terrified? Thrilled? I’m still thrilled, excited, and a little nervous. The terrified came, throttled me awhile, and finally passed. I’m trying to open up, let go, and enjoy the slow life that we intended for ourselves.

What are you looking forward to? All that new artwork that I’m about to make. It’s been pent-up awhile, and now it’s time to TURN IT UP.

What are you scared of? If I’m being honest, lots of stuff. Courage is something I’m working on.

What happens if it doesn’t work out? We’d just go somewhere else, I guess.

What is the worst thing that could happen? I could waste my opportunity to TURN IT UP.

What is the best thing that could happen? I could fall in love with Richmond, make my breakthrough artwork, and finally wrap up this extended late-bloomer thing.

Did you ever think you’d be where you are now? Nope.

Have you ever felt like this before? Never ever.

What are you leaving behind? The awkward years.

What are you taking with you? Love.

What will you miss? Oh, I’m super sentimental. I miss my family and friends.

What did your friends say when you told them? Everyone was encouraging, and wanted to know when they could come crash on our couch.
