happy diwali!

November 4, 2010

today is diwali, the hindu festival of light! although every country and region celebrates in different ways for different reasons, it’s generally known as the celebration of the triumph of good over evil, light over darkness, and the inner, transcendent reality over all “real-world” obstacles. it’s kind of a mix of christmas and new year’s- family visits, gift exchange, and lots of fireworks. tradition also calls for the lighting of diyas, small oil lamps or candles; making colorful, geometric rangoli paintings on the floor with rice, flowers, or colored powders; and raising colorful lanterns, called kandils. diwali is celebrated in india, nepal, singapore, malaysia, and several other southeast asian countries. here’s a look at the brightness of diwali’s traditions!!!
