a walk to remember

i am so far behind on writing about my travels this summer, so i’m going to blast through some memories. these were taken on my day exploring the roma/immigrant neighborhood of tarlabaşı, fabrice’s favorite area in istanbul. not exactly a tourist destination, although only a few blocks from the bustling taksim square, the neighborhood is a maze of narrow alleys with crumbling houses on steep hills. we explored some abandoned buildings, admired the vibrant, swaying laundry on lines, veiled ladies lifting buckets from third-story windows, gangs of kids giving peace signs to the camera, lazy cats lounging on windowsills and broken furniture, men getting shaves in barbershops with clean towels drying on racks outside…
