world AIDS day!

December 1, 2010

today is world AIDS day! a day to commemorate all of those who have lost their lives to HIV/AIDS but also to remind ourselves and others to stay healthy, aware and involved in our communities. here are some staggering statistics according to the 2009 united nation’s global HIV/AIDS report from

- an estimated 33.3 million people, including 2.5 million children, are living with HIV
- 1.8 million adults and children died from AIDS in 2009
- there were over 7000 new HIV infections per day in 2009
- in sub-saharan africa alone, 22.5 million people are living with HIV

that’s a lot of numbers and estimates, but the bottom line is that something must be done! education and awareness are the only way out of this mess, so no more excuses! get tested and stay educated!

here are some images from the massive aids memorial quilt, started here in san francisco in 1987. the quilt is composed of over 44,000 panels made by friends and family commemorating those who have lost their lives to the disease. take a minute today to remember robert mapplethorpe, isaac asimov, michel foucault, félix gonzález-torres, halston, leigh bowery, freddie mercury, easy-e, and the millions of other not-as-famous but just-as-important victims of HIV/AIDS.
