may is short story month! i love short stories because i often don’t have time (or the attention span!) to read longer and i’m always impressed by authors that are able to develop intriguing plots and characters in such a, well…short story. i’m currently reading a collection of short stories by dostoevsky (my first russian literature!) and “white nights” was absolutely wonderful and heart-wrenching. if you’re a fan of dreamers and unrequited love stories, please read it!
on road trips we like to listen to the new yorker fiction podcasts of short stories read by other authors; in going through them all i think i’ve almost heard them all! some of my favorites include:
- “emergency” by denis johnson read by tobias wollf
“how to date a brown girl (black girl, white girl, or halfie)” by junot díaz
“when we were nearly young” by mavis gallant read by antonya nelson
and other perennial favorites must not be left out: flannery o’connor’s collection of creepy southern shorts, a good man is hard to find; jorge luis borges’ philosophical trip, ficciones; and isabel allende’s the stories of eva luna. what are yours? i always need another short story to read!
