lone traveler

August 24, 2011

when i read about ruth orkin‘s “american girl” photo turning 60 this week, it got me all teary-eyed– i absolutely adore this photograph and know all-too-well the pleasure and plight of traveling alone as a woman in a foreign land! ruth (then 29) and ninalee craig (then 23), another lone female traveler, met at a cheap hotel in florence in 1951 and ran around capturing the ups and downs in the life of an american girl abroad in this series of photos. ruth had also done quite a bit of traveling, even bicycling and hitch-hiking across the country at age 17! what an inspiration for single women travelers!!!

although it’s nice to have a companion, sometimes the best trips you can have are not knowing anyone, no one knowing you, and the complete freedom to choose and explore unknown cities, people, and spaces. despite the occasional fear, nerves, loneliness and the annoying gawking dudes, i’d much rather travel alone! here are some photos from my solo trips to morocco, turkeygreece, spain… would you/do you guys travel alone?

and ps antonioni must have taken notes from this photo for that one eerie scene in l’aventura!

I think that is so damned awesome that you traveled alone. I loved reviewing your posts!

When I was about your age, I was in the Air Force. I caught a `hop’ to Japan and then Okinawa and traveled alone. I also did some side excursions alone when I was in Italy. I love traveling with friends too, but being alone opens up all kinds of unique experiences.
