You guys….I had no idea how much I would fall in love with HAWAII! When my dad invited me to accompany him & my stepmom, Debra, for a week in Honolulu, I really had no expectations. None! Maybe traveling that way makes everything better…but maybe Hawaii just fucking rules! Here are some notes & photos from dreamland:
Hawaii is the world’s most isolated land mass! There’s just under 2,000 miles between the islands and the nearest continent! I flew from SF for 5 hours and there is NOTHING BUT WATER between here and there! It takes a certain person to move 2,000 miles away from any other civilization.
There’s a solid “fuck-it-all” mentality that gives the whole place the ultimate island vibe. And for the people who are from there…..you are awesome. So many of you are “hapa” (half AZN, just like me!) and for the first time in my entire life I felt like I looked like everyone else. I fit in! That feeling is…wow. Crazy.
“Surf, work, surf”.
“This is still America.”
HAWAIIAN DAYZ: 6:45am wake up. 7am swim in ocean. Lay on beach. Breakfast with parents. Island breeze island breeze island breeze. Adventure.
Various outings: in the water, on a boat, around tourist town, at Goodwill, hiking in the jungle, dipping in waterfalls, swinging on vines, driving the coast, snorkeling with sea turtles!, eating udon, eating shrimp, eating malasadas, eating sushi, eating fishburgers, RIDING MY FIRST WAVES EVER!!!
And along with highest heights come lowest lows. I definitely experienced the post-trip withdrawal, guiltily searching for apartments on craigslist, hoarding coconut candy & chocolate-covered macadamia nuts, deep thoughts about surfing and considering buying a wetsuit (WTF?!)…..I will return to you someday, islands. That’s a promise!
A BIG HUGE MAHALO to my parents for letting me tag along on this incredible trip! AND MUCHOS MAHALOS to Nathan, Rei, Jaime, Sof & friends for taking me along on their ridiculous lifestyle of surfing and boating and dancing and hanging loose! To Kyle for showing me around Manoa & my first real tropical jungle! And to all the awesome artists & friends I met along the way. Stay tuned for more coverage of Hawaii coming soon….
