Trees Can Draw

August 21, 2012

While visiting my family in the British countryside several years ago, we stopped into the New Art Gallery Warsall and I saw these photos of trees drawing. I forgot about them for a while and today decided to try to find them again. I searched for “pens tied to tree drawings” and lo and behold, Tim Knowles was the first result on the list!

“Tree Drawings. A series of drawings produced using drawing implements attached to the tips of tree branches, the wind’s effects on the tree, recorded on paper. Like signatures each drawing reveals the different qualities and characteristics of each tree.”

I love the absurdity of this entire project: the anthropomorphization of the trees, the easel, the deliberate choice of varying tree species, the photo and video documentation, leaving the finished product to the will of the wind, chance. It’s beautiful and hilarious and who ever said that trees couldn’t draw?

I also enjoy his balloon drawings. Read more about the process on Cabinet.
